About Henry's Fork - Mesa Canyon
The Henry's Fork's Mesa Canyon section transforms below Harriman Park. This is where the river sheds its placid nature for a rugged, fast-paced character. Over 15 miles, it drops more than a thousand feet, creating a challenging environment. Access is limited by the steep terrain, and three major waterfalls render six miles unnavigable by boat. Upper Mesa Falls is a spectacular 114-foot plunge over volcanic rock, with boardwalks and viewing platforms offering close-up perspectives. The Big Falls Inn, overlooking the falls, provides historical and geological context. Floating Cardiac Canyon, downstream from Lower Mesa Falls, is an intense whitewater experience framed by sheer basalt cliffs. This section demands expert boating skills and is only accessible by launching a raft at a challenging boat slide below Lower Mesa Falls. The steep trail to the launch is rough and dangerous. The canyon’s dark cliffs, roaring rapids, and clear water create a powerful sensory immersion. This trip is highly sought after, particularly during the salmonfly hatch. Cardiac Canyon is known for big trout. During the salmonfly hatch, expect large dry flies to work. Following this, golden stoneflies and yellow sallies become important. When these hatches are on, fish will rise readily. For nymphs, consider large stonefly patterns like a Pat's Rubber Legs or a Kaufmann's Stone. Streamers can also be effective, especially in the faster water and along the canyon walls. Think about Clouser Minnows or Sculpin patterns. When working the canyon, focus on the seams and eddies created by the complex structure. The whitewater sections will hold fish looking for an easy meal. Mornings and evenings can be particularly productive, with rising fish often visible. Given the demanding nature of this section, anglers should be prepared for challenging hikes and swift water.
