About Henry's Fork - Box Canyon
The Box Canyon section of the Henry's Fork is a dramatic three-mile stretch carved by basalt canyon walls, starting just below the Island Park Dam. This is a powerful river environment. The current runs swift, creating deep runs and turbulent riffles that demand respect. Wading opportunities are limited due to the confined canyon and fast water, especially when flows exceed 1,000 CFS. Most anglers use drift boats to navigate this section, allowing them to effectively cover the prime holding water. Access is primarily via a boat ramp just downstream of the dam, with a hiking trail running the length of the canyon offering some limited wade fishing possibilities. Visually, you'll see the dark, jagged lava rock formations that define the canyon, with the clear, deep water moving with considerable force. This section is renowned for its large, wild rainbow trout. The nutrient-rich waters support a robust food chain, and these fish grow big and strong. While dry fly fishing can be productive during salmonfly and golden stone hatches in early summer, nymphs and streamers are your workhorses here throughout the season, often well into November. Think about fishing large stonefly nymphs like a #8-10 Skwala nymph or a #10 Pat's Rubber Legs deep in the runs. Zebra midges in sizes #16-20 are also a staple, especially when the water is clear and the fish are selective. For streamers, try a #6 Zonker or a Clouser Minnow to imitate baitfish. Guides often "walk" their boats through this short section, allowing clients extended time to work the best runs and pools. Wade fishing is challenging but rewarding, requiring careful footing on the rocky, fast water. Be mindful of other anglers; give them space and work your way through the water efficiently.
