About Henry's Fork - Harriman Ranch

The Henry's Fork, below the Box Canyon dam, transitions into a 10-mile stretch of meadow and spring creek water. This section, often called the "Ranch," is renowned for its large, selective rainbow trout. Access is available via walk-in from parking areas at Last Chance, Osborne Bridge, Harriman Park headquarters, and Forest Service Road #313. The water here is generally shallow and clear, with a soft gradient. You'll find a mix of short runs, pools, and riffles, with grassy banks and occasional submerged structure like rocks and weed beds. Wading is usually good, allowing anglers to carefully approach rising fish. This is not a place for blindly casting large nymphs. The trout are educated and demand precise presentations. You'll be looking for risers, and when you find them, expect to use light tippets and small flies. The primary food sources include caddisflies, mayflies, and stoneflies. When fish are looking up, try small Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, or specific mayfly imitations like a BWO Comparadun. If you're fishing nymphs subsurface, focus on small Baetis nymphs or caddis pupae, fished on a long leader with minimal weight. Concentrate your efforts in the morning and late afternoon when fish are often most active. Be prepared for a battle; even experienced anglers consider landing a few big rainbows a successful day on the Henry's Fork.
