About Henry's Fork

The Henry's Fork Snake River in Fremont and Madison Counties, Idaho, runs 112.5 miles. You can fish it from the bank, by wading, or from a boat. Upstream sections hold more fish, but the lower river is where you'll find the bigger trout. The river changes character a lot along its length, with deep pools, fast riffles, and slower runs. Look for holding water where the banks are natural, near inlets, or where the river narrows or widens. Access points are spread out, with boat ramps, docks, and campgrounds in some areas. Pay attention to the current lines and how the water flows to figure out where the trout are positioned. This river supports good numbers of brown trout, cutthroat trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, and mountain whitefish. You’ll also find hybrid cutbow trout here. Recent surveys confirm brook trout, brown trout, mountain whitefish, and rainbow trout are actively present. You might also catch Utah chub, yellow perch, lake trout, kokanee, or splake, though they aren't usually the target. Expect major insect hatches throughout the season that really get the trout feeding. When they're looking up, small caddis and mayfly imitations are crucial. For subsurface action, nymphs like Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, and beadhead caddis pupae work well. Streamers, especially in darker colors like black or olive, can draw strikes from larger trout, particularly in lower light or along deeper banks and drop-offs. Consider fishing streamers in the early morning or late evening. When wading, work the seams of the current and any visible structure. Be mindful of other anglers and give them space.
