About Henry's Fork - Lower
The Lower Henry's Fork, downstream from St. Anthony, offers a different experience than its famous upper reaches. This section flows through stands of cottonwood, and while it's less talked about, it holds a strong population of brown trout, including the potential for trophies. The river generally presents long riffles, deeper runs, and slower pools, creating varied habitat. Access can be challenging as much of the land is private, so knowing the public access points is key. From March through June, you can expect good dry fly opportunities. As the irrigation season progresses, flows drop significantly. When dry fly fishing tapers off, nymphing with smaller patterns in concentrated trout runs becomes very effective. Streamer fishing, worked slowly and deliberately, is also a solid tactic for enticing larger brown trout. Brown trout are the dominant species here, often preferring structure and holding in more secluded areas. While rainbow trout are present, they are less common. Look for insects like caddis and stoneflies, and later in the season, smaller mayflies. When the fish are looking up, try BWO patterns. For nymphs, small pheasant tails and prince nymphs are reliable. When fishing streamers, experiment with woolly buggers and sculpins, focusing on slow retrieves along the banks and near structure. Work the deeper runs and pools in the morning and late afternoon. Be mindful of other anglers; give them space and approach the water with respect.
