About Snake River - Hells Canyon
The Snake River carves through Hells Canyon, North America's deepest gorge, forming a rugged border between Oregon and Idaho. This is big, wild water, a place where the river is the dominant feature. The canyon itself plunges nearly 8,000 feet, with sheer basalt walls and Seven Devils Mountains rising on the Idaho side. Down at the river level, the environment shifts dramatically. While the rims are forested, the canyon floor is arid, carved by the Snake over millions of years. Access is limited, with much of the canyon accessible only by boat. Key access points like Heller Bar near Clarkston, Washington, offer a glimpse into the scale of this place, with jet boats loading up and anglers lining the banks. The river here is wide and powerful, a classic steelhead river in the fall and winter, transforming from a reservoir upstream into a fast-flowing system. Steelhead are the primary target in Hells Canyon, and this section of the Snake River is known for its strong runs. Anglers often find success from mid-September through February, with the peak typically running from October to January. Side drifting is the go-to technique for many, and the waters around Heller Bar are particularly productive for this method. Rigging up involves medium-light spin rods with 10- to 12-pound hi-vis monofilament mainline and corresponding fluorocarbon leaders, about four feet long. A couple of #4 snelled hooks, baited with cured eggs, are standard. Sometimes a small drift bobber or puff ball is added to keep the bait just off the bottom and add color. For a more relaxed approach, pulling plugs also works well, allowing you to sit and wait for a bite. The Snake River's size allows it to absorb considerable pressure, so even when reports are hot, it rarely feels overcrowded. Be aware of other anglers and boat traffic, especially around popular access points.
