About Snake River - South Fork
The South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho offers 66 miles of blue-ribbon trout water. It flows from Palisades Dam down to its confluence with the Henry's Fork. The upper nine miles below the dam are narrow, then the river opens up, weaving around islands. Fall Creek enters the South Fork just upstream of the Swan Valley Bridge. Downstream from Conant Boat Access, the river enters a canyon with steep cliffs before widening into a floodplain. This area boasts the largest cottonwood gallery forest in the West. Access points include Palisades Dam, Palisades Creek, Spring Creek, Conant, Fullmer, Byington, Twin Bridges, and Lorenzo, all suitable for boat launches. The Canyon Rim Trail offers hiking access and views. The river's structure includes island complexes, inlets, and varied currents. Visually, it's a dynamic fishery, shifting from canyon walls to broad floodplains, with ample opportunities for both boat and shore anglers. This river is home to native Yellowstone cutthroat trout, along with healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout. Anglers are encouraged to harvest rainbow trout to help protect the native cutthroat. Look for prolific hatches of caddis and stoneflies, especially during the warmer months. Nymphing is effective in the river's many runs and pools. Swinging streamers can also produce results, particularly in the canyon sections. When fish are rising to dry flies, target them with imitations of the prevalent insects. During periods of strong hatches, dry fly fishing can be excellent. Focus on seams and riffles where insects tend to concentrate. In the canyon sections, streamers can be productive, especially swung across current. When nymphing, consider using a two-fly rig with attractors like a Pat's Rubber Legs or a San Juan Worm, followed by a smaller, more imitative nymph like a Pheasant Tail or a Hare's Ear. Pay attention to the river's flow and structure; fish will often hold in deeper pockets or behind structure out of the main current. When working the water, consider fishing from the dam downstream towards Conant for canyon fishing, or explore the wider, island-strewn sections further down. Always be aware of boat traffic, especially during peak season.
