Fly Fishing Stream Conditions Report: Blue River

This year: The Blue River is currently seeing flows around 295 CFS, providing clear and wadeable conditions. Earlier in the month, particularly in the Silverthorne stretch below Dillon Reservoir, flows were significantly lower at 54 CFS. This section remains cold and stable, but is very clear and technical. Water temperatures this month averaged 53°F. Fishing is technical across the board, requiring precise presentations and careful approaches. Trout are pressured and will not tolerate heavy rigs, flashy flies, or poor drifts. Focus on deeper, walking-speed runs, soft seams, drop-offs, and subtle current breaks where fish can feed without expending much energy. Sight fishing can be productive when the light is right, but patience is key. Use long leaders, light fluorocarbon, and just enough weight to reach the feeding lane. It's wise to observe fish before casting and adjust your depth before changing flies. The late morning through early afternoon has been the most dependable window. Anglers can expect reliable midge hatches in the mornings, followed by caddis and sporadic mayfly activity, including PMDs from midday into the afternoon. Blue-wing olives are also present. Effective patterns include small Mysis shrimp, RS2s, Zebra Midges, and WD-40s. For dry fly opportunities, look for PMDs between noon and 3 PM.
