About Arkansas River

The Arkansas River in Colorado offers anglers approximately 150 miles of diverse trout water, originating near Leadville and flowing through scenic canyons and valleys before reaching the plains. This river is renowned for its large population numbers of brown trout and rainbows, with anglers frequently landing fish over 17 inches, particularly in the canyon stretches between Salida and Royal Gorge. Key hatches include Blue Wing Olives, midges, caddis, and stoneflies, providing excellent dry fly and nymphing opportunities. Float fishing is highly recommended, especially through the dramatic Royal Gorge, with convenient access points like Brown's Canyon and Big Bend. For nymphing and streamer fishing, a 6-weight rod with a sink tip line is suggested, while a 5-weight with a floating line is ideal for dry flies.
