About South Platte - Dream Stream
The South Platte River's "Dream Stream" is a 3.8-mile Gold Medal tailwater section located between Spinney and Elevenmile Reservoirs in South Park, now known as the Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area. This accessible public water offers year-round fishing opportunities due to stable tailwater temperatures, attracting large Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as Kokanee salmon in the fall. Anglers will find a reasonably wide and deep river with riffles and seams, where trout often hug the banks and bottom, but can be brought to the surface during hatches. Be prepared for finicky trout that require a diverse fly selection, including dries, nymphs, scuds, attractors, terrestrials, and streamers in various sizes. While specific hatch names are not provided, the trout's selective nature suggests the importance of observing insect activity. Access is available via four parking areas off County Road 59, with additional access below Spinney Dam (requiring a park entrance fee). Anglers should be prepared for potential crowds, wind, and sudden storms, and bring their own food and refreshments as amenities are distant. Fishing is restricted to artificial flies or lures only, with catch and release for all species, and a portion of the stream is closed to fishing from September 15th to December 31st for kokanee spawning.
