About Shoshone River - South Fork
The South Fork of the Shoshone River, a scenic wild trout fishery, flows from the Absaroka Range in northwest Wyoming. This river is home to rainbow, brook, brown trout, Yellowstone cutthroat, lake trout, and mountain whitefish, with the upper reaches emphasizing cutthroat and the lower reaches offering an excellent brown trout fishery. Anglers will find dry flies particularly effective, with Golden Stone and Caddis patterns being popular choices. Wading is the primary method of access, as floating is not feasible due to the river's nature. While private property limits some access, driving State Highway 291 out of Cody reveals good opportunities along the lower 32 miles of the South Fork.
