Report Summary for May 2026
This year: May on the South Fork of the Shoshone River presented a dynamic fishing environment. Early in the month, flows were quite manageable around 107 CFS, offering excellent fishing. As the month progressed, runoff led to significantly higher flows, peaking around 1670 CFS by late May. Overall, this month saw flows ranging from a low of 29 CFS to a high of 1870 CFS, averaging 626 CFS. Despite these fluctuations, fishing remained good, particularly on days with improved water clarity. Nymphing was a consistently productive technique throughout the month, especially with stoneflies, Perdigons, and Pheasant Tails. Streamer fishing also proved to be a reliable option and became increasingly effective as the month wore on. On warmer, overcast days, anglers observed dry fly midge activity, providing opportunities for surface action. The most consistent fishing window was often between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. For nymphing, effective patterns included the Brooks Stonefly Nymph, Perdigons, and the Pheasant Tail Nymph. When midges were active, a Zebra Midge or Skittering Zelon Midge proved successful. Don't forget to have some Tailwater Sowbugs on hand as well.
