About Big Fishing Creek
Big Fishing Creek, particularly the four-mile "Narrows" section near Lamar, is a premier wild brown trout fishery renowned for its cold, limestone-fed waters. This dynamic stream offers a variety of water types, from fast riffles to slow, glassy pools, making it suitable for diverse fly-fishing techniques. Anglers can expect to encounter wild brown trout up to 16 inches and native brook trout up to 12 inches, with opportunities for larger leviathan brown trout, especially during high-water streamer conditions or the famed Green Drake hatch. The stream also supports prolific hatches including Blue Quills, Hendrickson subspecies, Black Caddis, Sulphurs, Slate Drakes, Blue-Winged Olive Duns, and Tricos, providing consistent dry fly and nymphing opportunities throughout the season. Abundant wildlife inhabits the heavily shaded valley, adding to the wild experience, and the stream remains productive even during periods of extreme summer heat and low water.
