Anglers will find volcanic rock formations like Wolf Rock along its course, with natural hot springs such as Belknap and Terwilliger nearby. The river's character demands respect and careful navigation, particularly around features like the Sahalie and Koosah waterfalls downstream. Bank access along the Upper McKenzie is very limited, making it challenging for shore-bound anglers to find consistent spots. Wading this section is not recommended due to the powerful currents and deep water. For those looking to cover water, boating is the primary option, but the swift currents and rapids mean this stretch is only suitable for experienced individuals. A McKenzie drift boat is the ideal craft for navigating these waters safely and effectively. The McKenzie River holds a diverse population of fish, including redside rainbows ranging from 6 to 20 inches, and native cutthroat trout typically between 6 and 18 inches. Anglers will also encounter cutt-bows and summer steelhead, which can weigh from 6 to 10 pounds. Beyond trout and steelhead, spring Chinook salmon run the river, with their peak presence from May through June. These salmon offer a different challenge for anglers looking to target larger, anadromous species. Dry-fly fishing is what the McKenzie is best known for. During the summer, reliable hatches of stoneflies, caddis, mayflies, and midges bring fish to the surface. Specific caddis species, including spotted, saddle-case, green, and McKenzie caddis, are active from June through August.
