About Walker River - West

The West Walker River is a classic freestone small river, running unchecked from its headwaters in the upper sections of the Emigrant wilderness. This snowmelt-fed stream is full of riffles, large boulders, and pools, offering an open and accessible fishing experience. To reach a prime section, turn off Highway 395 about 15 miles north of Bridgeport, California, onto Highway 108, Sonora Pass Road. Head four miles south past the Marine Corps Winter Training Facility, then continue one mile further to a sign on the east (left) side of the road for Pickle Meadow Wildlife Area and trout habitat. Turn here and follow the short drive to a large dirt parking area. A brief walk from the parking area leads directly to a large meadow section, providing ample room to fish downstream. While much of the river flows through private land, this specific area in Pickle Meadow offers excellent public access. The river here is very open, making wading and casting generally easy. Expect fish to be on the smaller side, with an average length of about eight inches, but they are plentiful and eager. The West Walker River is known for its opportunistic trout, making for an active day on the water. Anglers targeting the West Walker River will find a mix of species, predominantly brown trout, with rainbow trout and brook trout also present. Few whitefish are found here. These trout are very opportunistic, hitting a variety of presentations. For flies, a large dry fly fished on its own can be effective, or you can use it as an indicator for a bead head caddis or Bird’s Nest as a dropper. A three or four-weight rod is ideal, depending on the wind conditions. Mornings are often better if you prefer to avoid the breeze, which predominantly comes from the west. Crowds can be moderate, but the area is expansive enough that you can usually find solitude by walking a bit from the main parking area. Focus your efforts on seams and current breaks where fish hold out of the main flow. The river’s character, with its numerous boulders and pools, provides excellent holding water. While wet wading is an option, the snowmelt-fed water can be cool, so plan accordingly. Ensure you have a good pair of wading boots for navigating the rocky bottom.
