About Walker River

The Walker River is formed in southern Lyon County, Nevada, where the East and West Walker Rivers meet. This 62-mile river is fed primarily by snowmelt from California's Sierra Nevada, draining an arid section of the Great Basin as it flows into Walker Lake. The West Walker River offers varied terrain, moving through a rugged canyon, Antelope Valley, Hoye Canyon, Smith Valley, Wilson Canyon, and Mason Valley. The East Walker River begins in California's Bridgeport Valley, drawing water from Sierra streams within the Hoover Wilderness before forming Bridgeport Reservoir. The main stem of the Walker River then flows through Mason Valley, past Yerington, and turns southeast around the Wassuk Range. It continues through the Walker River Indian Reservation, where it is dammed to create Weber Reservoir. U.S. Route 395 provides access along the West Walker River. Water diversions for irrigation have significantly impacted the Walker River's flow into Walker Lake, causing the lake's level to drop substantially over time. This river system offers diverse water types, from the rugged canyons of the West Walker to the broader valleys and reservoir sections. Anglers can expect a mix of faster canyon water and slower, impounded sections, with the river's character changing as it moves through different valleys. Cutthroat trout are present in the Walker River. Focus on areas with current breaks or deeper pockets, especially in the canyon sections of the West Walker. In the more open valley stretches, target structure along the banks or any deeper channels. Given the snowmelt origins, water clarity can vary, so adjust your presentation accordingly. A standard nymph rig with a strike indicator can be effective, or try streamer patterns fished on a slow retrieve. When fishing the Walker River, be mindful of private land and respect all posted boundaries.
