Report Summary for Jul 2026

This year: The Bitterroot River is in classic mid-summer low-water shape with flows dropping and clearing to 1,390 CFS. Water clarity remains very good throughout the valley. However, water temperatures are hitting 67.6°F overnight, which brushes the thermal stress threshold before the day even begins. Midday smoke is also forecast to filter the sun. To keep fish safe and find the most active feeding, focus your efforts during the first two hours of morning light and again at dusk. Target key structures like grassy banks, side channels, riffles, and softer seams where trout find refuge in cooler, oxygenated water. Morning hatches feature moderate Pale Morning Duns from 7 AM to 10 AM, while heavy caddis activity dominates the evenings. Grasshoppers and other terrestrials are also starting to produce during the midday hours. Effective patterns include the Chubby Chernobyl, Water Walker, Elk Hair Caddis, Golden Stonefly Nymph, and Barrick's PMD Bubble.

Best time of day: Morning

Prior years: The summer dry fly season is in full swing, offering excellent fishing with stable, clear flows. Water temperatures start cool in the low 60s each morning and climb to the high 60s by late afternoon. Please note that hoot owl restrictions are in effect from the confluence of the East and West Fork down to the mouth, making it essential to target your efforts accordingly. To find the most consistent action, focus your efforts on the early and late windows. Fish Tricos and PMDs at first light, utilizing early morning spinner falls and late evening dun hatches with smaller mayfly patterns like Sparkle Duns, Rusty Spinners, and Parachute PMDs. During the midday lulls, work grassy edges, undercut banks, and slow seams with big foam bugs, adding a slight twitch to provoke aggressive cutthroat. You can also pair a hopper with a beadhead dropper such as a Frenchie, Duracell Jig, or small Perdigon to keep finding fish when topwater action slows.
