Report Summary for Apr 2026

This year: Flow has been good and the water clear. Water temperature is around 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Fishing quality is good. Access points are open, but roads near higher elevations may still have snowpack. Boat ramps at lower elevations should be available, but it's always a good idea to check with local rangers for any last-minute closures. Focus on nymphs, especially small midges and Baetis emergers, throughout the day. Streamers can work well in slower, deeper runs. Try dead-drifting emergers, small parachute dries, or using emerger droppers in sizes 18-22. Midges and BWOs are active. USGS data shows this month's flow averaging around 7319 CFS, with a minimum of 2280 CFS, which is a significant increase from last month's average of 1489 CFS.

Best time of day: All day

Prior years: Flows are running high, with some clarity issues reported. Fishing is good, especially in the lower reaches. Boat ramps are open, but watch for debris. Upcoming runoff is a hazard to be aware of. Focus on slower moving water, keeping streamers deep and retrieves slow. Double nymph rigs are effective, especially in eddies, seam margins, and riffle pools. Target sloughs and backwater side channels. Sinking tips in the 6ips to 8ips range can work in deeper pools with slow currents. Expect midge and Blue Wing Olive activity. Worm and attractor patterns are also working well. Flies like Pat's Rubber Legs, San Juan Worms, and Span Juan Worms are recommended, along with attractor patterns like The Blue Charm.
