About North Platte - Miracle Mile

The Miracle Mile stretch of the North Platte River begins below Kortes Dam, quickly flowing from a steep, narrow canyon into a sagebrush flat. This section of the river, varying from 5.5 to 15 miles depending on water levels in Pathfinder Reservoir, is the largest continuous public water on the North Platte outside of the Medicine Bow National Forest. Located at the foot of the Seminoe Mountains, about 40 miles north of I-80 at Sinclair, Wyoming, the Mile is sandwiched between Seminoe Reservoir upstream and Pathfinder Reservoir downstream. Seminoe Reservoir plays a critical role, acting as a giant settling pond that controls water temperatures, silt, and fluctuating water levels, creating a stable environment for fish. This blue ribbon trout water is known for its remote, wild character, presenting a technically rewarding challenge for anglers. Be prepared for high winds and low temperatures, especially during spring and fall. The Miracle Mile is home to some of the biggest, hardest-fighting trout in the West. Anglers target both brown and rainbow trout here, with large numbers of both species making annual runs upriver to spawn. Resident fish average a robust 12-20 inches, but during the spawn, much larger fish in the 24-30 inch range become available. The potential to hook a 10+ pound trout is a real draw, making every cast a chance at a trophy. Pathfinder Reservoir, downstream, functions as a giant trout hatchery, contributing to the strong fish populations found throughout the Miracle Mile. Trout in the Miracle Mile do not readily rise to the surface due to the abundant food sources available in the water column. While blanket hatches of caddis, baetis, and midges occur, nymph rigs and streamers are consistently the most productive methods for targeting these fish. Effective patterns include midges, San Juan worms, small pheasant tails, Orange Blossom Specials, Platte River Spiders, and Platte River Specials. Focus on presenting these subsurface patterns effectively. Float trips offer access to many miles of water otherwise unreachable, allowing anglers to cover significant ground and explore varied holding water. Wade fishing is also an option, particularly in areas with easier bank access. When nymphing, pay attention to current seams and deeper runs where larger fish often hold. For streamers, work banks and structure with an aggressive retrieve. Always carry plenty of water and be aware of the remote nature of the area; cell service is unreliable.
