About Encampment River

The Encampment River, a world-class blue ribbon trout stream, originates in Colorado and flows northwest into Wyoming, passing through its own canyon before joining the North Platte. Much of its course, approximately 10 miles, runs through the Encampment River Wilderness, making it difficult to access. Wild trout here are known to follow insect clouds up from the North Platte, staging in different sections. The river is best floated using rafts due to diversion dams and limited private ranch access, with peak flows typically occurring in June and July. Wade fishing is excellent after runoff subsides. Significant hatches include Salmonflies, Golden Stoneflies, Caddis, and notably, heavy Green Drake hatches, making standard dry flies like Sofa Pillows and Elk Hair Caddis highly effective. Presentation is key as these wild trout experience low fishing pressure.
