South of Pawlet, the river flows through a narrow, high-gradient channel where overhanging hemlocks and thick alders leave very little room for a traditional overhead backcast. Anglers working this upper stretch need to rely on roll casts, bow-and-arrow presentations, and short, precise drifts to put a fly into the tight pockets behind boulders and fallen logs. The water in this upper zone runs exceptionally cool and clear, requiring a slow, stealthy approach to keep from alerting fish in the shallow, glassy pools. Below the confluence with Flower Brook in Pawlet, the Mettawee River transitions into a medium-sized river with a much more open canopy. This middle and lower river runs through the flat, agricultural Mettawee Valley before eventually emptying into Lake Champlain. You can find multiple convenient parking and access points running parallel to the water along VT Route 30 and River Road. The riverbed in this agricultural section features a classic mix of cobble riffles, deep gravel tailouts, and shaded undercut clay banks. Wading is generally straightforward through the valley runs, though you will still want to watch for shifting gravel bars and deeper, swirling runs near the sharp outside bends. This river is managed by Vermont Fish & Game as a completely wild fishery supporting self-sustaining populations of Brook, Rainbow, and Brown Trout. Because these are entirely wild fish, they are highly attuned to the natural insect cycles of the valley and will quickly reject a poorly drifted fly. The river supports a rich variety of hatches, including Hendricksons, Sulfurs, and Blue-Winged Olives that bring trout to the surface in steady feeding lanes. You will also see active flights of Yellow Sallies, Little Green Stoneflies, and both spring and Fall Caddis depending on the daily water temperatures. During quieter periods, particularly in the softer glides, clouds of tiny Tricos and terrestrial flying ants provide highly technical dry-fly targets along the slower bankside seams. To find success on the Mettawee River, focus on clean dry-fly presentations using long, fine leaders to match these active insect hatches. Target the distinct foam lines where fast water meets slow eddies, letting your fly drift completely drag-free over the deeper depressions where wild brown trout lie waiting. Keep your profile low when approaching the flatter pools, as the wild rainbows and brookies in these clear stretches will bolt for deep cover at the slightest shadow. Much of this river flows through working agricultural land, so it is critical to respect the local dairy landowners by closing gates, avoiding active pastures, and staying strictly below the high-water mark. Keep a spool of 6X fluorocarbon tippet in your vest for the flat water, and watch the bubble lines closely for the subtle sips of rising trout.
