Fly Fishing Stream Conditions Report: Weber River

This year: Flows on the Weber have ranged from 114 to 240 CFS, offering healthy, near-normal summer levels. The water is clear, which puts fish into highly predictable feeding lanes, though you should keep an eye out for afternoon storm chances that can roll in during the heat of the day. Nymphing has been more productive on most days, but dry fly opportunities are readily available. Focus on the morning hours to beat any potential storms and target the most active feeding windows. PMDs are hatching heavily, particularly between mid-morning and early afternoon. Caddis are also strong, especially from midday onward and into the evening, alongside a moderate presence of Yellow Sallies.

Prior years: Flow conditions on the Weber River vary significantly by section. Below Rockport Dam, flows run around 200 CFS to 201 CFS at Wanship and Coalville, providing good, fishable conditions, though the water remains pushy. Below Echo Reservoir to Henefer, flows are higher around 431 CFS due to irrigation releases, creating borderline fishable conditions where fish are forced to the river's edge to find structure. Downstream towards Morgan and Ogden, flows are more fishable but wading remains tricky. Overall fishing quality is good to very good, though hot afternoons can slow the action down. Nymphing along the bottom is the most productive approach. Effective patterns include sow bugs, pheasant tails, hares ears, and midges. For dry fly anglers, summer hatches of PMDs, midges, caddis, and Yellow Sallies are active. Focus on early mornings and late evenings for the best dry fly action, starting with midges in the morning before PMDs begin to move. Terrestrials and hopper patterns are also excellent choices during the heat of summer. Additionally, streamer fishing low and slow through deeper holes can be effective, as are crankbaits and jigs where regulations allow, keeping in mind that certain stretches are flies and lures only.
