About Provo River - Upper
The Upper Provo River originates high in the Uinta Mountains at around 10,000 feet, flowing through the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest as a classic freestone river. It holds a healthy mix of wild Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat, and Brook Trout, offering a more adventurous and remote experience compared to the more popular Middle and Lower Provo sections. The rugged canyon terrain features pocket water, riffles, deep rock-lined runs, and beaver ponds — rewarding anglers willing to explore. Timing is everything on the Upper Provo. Spring runoff keeps the river unfishable until late June or mid-July, but from then through September the dry fly fishing can be exceptional. Fish are opportunistic and less pressured than tailwater trout, making them willing to rise for attractor patterns like Stimulators, Elk Hair Caddis, Royal Wulffs, and hopper-dropper rigs through the summer and into fall. Access requires some planning, as the most reliable public water sits within National Forest boundaries along Highway 35 near Woodland and along the scenic Mirror Lake Highway (UT-150). Much of the river outside forest land runs through private property, though some walk-in access agreements through the Utah DWR help fill in the gaps. A short, light rod (3–4 weight), quiet wading, and an eye on water temperatures in late summer will round out a successful day on this beautiful high-mountain stream.
