About Green River - B Section - Devil's Hole

Section B of the Green River — nicknamed Devil's Hole — is the river's most remote and least pressured stretch, running nine miles from Little Hole downstream to Indian Crossing in Browns Park. The lengthy 45-minute drive out and limited wading access allow healthy Brown and Rainbow Trout populations to thrive undisturbed. Because of this logistical challenge, anglers willing to put in the effort can find fewer people and bigger fish than anywhere on the more famous Section A. Average fish run 15 to 18 inches and carry good weight for their length, with Browns documented up to 29 lbs. and Rainbows to 23 lbs. The section is defined by two very distinct personalities divided by Red Creek. The upper half mirrors lower Section A — riffles, pools, deep back-eddies, and large trout populations dominated by Brown Trout with solid numbers of Rainbows mixed in. At the four-mile point, Red Creek converges with the Green, creating the largest rapid between the dam and the Colorado state line. Red Creek can flush turbid flows into the river during heavy rainfall, so savvy anglers check the forecast and position themselves above the confluence if storms are approaching. Below Red Creek, when water is clear and flows predictable, the opportunity for casting large dry flies in the swirling back eddies and soft pockets along the edges of the rapids can be very rewarding. The lower miles then flatten into grassy banks, islands, and gentle riffles all the way to Indian Crossing. Logistics for Section B require more planning than Section A, but the payoff is well worth it. Many floaters opt for a two-day overnight trip with a campout to make the long shuttle worthwhile, and the section offers 17 streamside campsites accessible by boat or on foot. Reservations are required year-round, with roughly half available to book online during summer and the remainder on a first-come, first-served basis. Hardcore anglers can also string Sections A and B together for a roughly 15-mile epic single-day float from the dam all the way to Indian Crossing. For those seeking solitude, bigger fish, and a wilder stretch of one of the West's great tailwaters, Devil's Hole delivers.
