Report Summary for Mar 2026
This year: The Green River's A Section has seen stable flows this month, averaging around 841 CFS, with observations ranging from 834 to 850 CFS. Water temperatures have been consistent, averaging 41°F. Fishing quality has been good overall, particularly on calm, warm days. Mornings are seeing a consistent midge hatch starting around 10 am, bringing pods of trout to the surface on calm days. Later in the day, Blue Wing Olives begin to show, with increasing numbers. Don't overlook terrestrials like ants, beetles, crickets, or cicadas. For dry fly fishing, especially with small midges, use 5-6x tippet. When throwing terrestrials, 4x tippet is appropriate. Nymphing rigs should be set around 9 feet deep, focusing on the middle and tail-outs of runs, using 5x or 6x tippet. Dry dropper rigs are also proving effective. When wade fishing, take your time to spot suspended fish or those actively feeding on the surface, as this is often more productive than blind casting. Streamer fishing remains a good option, particularly on windy or cloudy days, requiring a slow retrieve and covering plenty of water with 0x tippet. Key patterns for this period include nymphing with a Frenchie, Perdigon, or a Zebra Midge. For dry fly action, try a Midge Adult Dry or a GT Triple Double Midge. Don't forget to have some terrestrial patterns like a Fat Albert on hand.
Best time of day: Morning
Prior years: Fishing on the Green River A Section is generally good this month. Flows are high at 1200 cfs. Midge hatches are a consistent event, typically beginning around 10 AM in the mornings. On calm days, you can find pods of trout actively feeding on these tiny insects. Nymphing remains a productive technique, with fish holding in their winter runs. Nymph rigs around 9 feet deep have been most effective, and it's important to watch for subtle strikes. Streamer fishing is also consistent, especially in the lower half of Section A, and can be particularly good early and late in the day. Keep an eye out for tiny mayfly hatches, and while Blue Wing Olive (BWO) sightings are still sporadic, expect this hatch to start ramping up in the coming weeks.
