About Fremont River - Upper

The Upper Fremont River, a seven-mile stretch flowing from Johnson Valley Reservoir to Mill Meadow Reservoir, offers excellent fly fishing just 30 minutes from Capitol Reef National Park. This section is renowned for its abundant trout, including brown, rainbow, cutthroat, brook, and tiger trout, often found in large undercuts and easily accessible for wading. Anglers can anticipate rewarding dry fly fishing with significant hatches of Midges, Baetis, Olive Stoneflies, Golden Stones, and Tricos. Streamer fishing is also highly effective, particularly for enticing the largest trout. The first four miles below the dam are particularly remote, offering pristine water with minimal pressure and the potential for encounters with large brown trout.
