About Youghiogheny River
The Youghiogheny River in Southwest Pennsylvania is a 134-mile tailwater tributary offering year-round trout fishing, known for its recovering fishery and excellent aquatic insect population. Anglers can target stocked rainbow and brown trout, as well as wild brown and brook trout, with opportunities for both wading and drift boat fishing. Significant hatches include Little Black Stoneflies, Caddis flies, Quill Gordons, March Browns, Sulphurs, Slate Drakes, Blue-Winged Olives, and October Caddis. The most popular fly fishing section is between the dam and Ohiopyle, though caution is advised in swift and deep areas, making drift boat access often preferable. A 9-foot 5-weight rod is suitable for dry flies and nymphs, while a 6-weight or 7-weight is recommended for larger streamers targeting stocked trout.
