About Oil Creek
Oil Creek, a 46.7-mile tributary of the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania, offers a substantial fly fishing experience with sections reaching up to 100 feet wide. This diverse fishery supports holdover and stocked brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, and smallmouth bass. Anglers can anticipate notable hatches including Caddis, Blue Quill, Hendrickson, Quill Gordon, Red Quill, March Brown, Gray Fox, Light Cahill, Sulphur, and Tan Caddis. Two popular delayed harvest sections, along with the highly regarded stretch below Pine Creek down to the Allegheny River, provide excellent opportunities for nymphing and dry fly fishing amidst ideal riffles, pools, and runs. Access is available from Pennsylvania Route 8, with some areas requiring a short hike, making a 9-foot 5-weight rod with floating line and 3X-5X tippet a recommended setup.
