About Loyalhanna Creek

Loyalhanna Creek, a 50-mile tributary in Southwest Pennsylvania, is a 30-40 foot wide stream offering a challenging yet rewarding fly fishing experience. This waterway boasts a mix of moderate pools, slower rocky areas, and scattered riffles, with abundant overhead cover keeping the water cool and supporting a healthy population of brown trout, including stocked holdovers. Anglers can pursue these plentiful brown trout, as well as native browns, rainbows, and brook trout from the tributaries and headwaters. Key insect hatches include March Browns, Slate Drakes, Green and Tan Caddis, and various stonefly nymphs, while terrestrials are effective in warmer months. The Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only (DHALO) section near Ligonier, designated Keystone Select Stocked Trout Water, is a prime spot receiving substantial stockings of larger trout, with good fishing extending downstream to Kingston. This section is accessible for wading anglers and features stream grooming with dams and plunge pools that help trout hold over year-round.
