About Big Bushkill Creek

Big Bushkill Creek, a 30-mile tributary of the Delaware River in Northeast Pennsylvania's Poconos, offers excellent fly fishing for brook, brown, and rainbow trout. This picturesque stream boasts varied water, including good-sized pools, long runs, and riffles, complemented by beautiful small waterfalls. Approximately 12 miles of the creek are open to fishing, with about half of this section managed as Catch-and-Release – Flyfishing Only (CRFFO). Anglers can anticipate notable hatches such as Blue Quills, Hendricksons, Grannom Caddis, and Blue Winged Olives. For fishing this stream, a 9-foot 5-weight fly rod with floating line is recommended, along with a 9-foot leader and tippet size 3X to 5X. Access points are available, and while wading can be challenging in some areas, a wading staff is advised. The northern half of the basin is characterized by woodlands and low-density residential development, while the southern half, underlain by carbonate geology, features many springs that help maintain cool water temperatures, providing an excellent brown trout fishery.
