About Carson River - West Fork

The West Fork Carson River flows for about 35 miles, offering varied water. Its upper sections wind through high mountain meadows, creating slow turns and fast riffles. East of Pickets Junction, the river changes character, flowing faster with broken runs, plunge pools, and pocket water. Large boulders are common throughout many sections. The river shifts between freestone and meadow stream characteristics, and current flows can be clear around 146 CFS. However, runoff can dirty the water in the afternoon. Access is straightforward, as the river parallels Highway 88 for much of its length. A handicapped fishing access point, complete with cement platforms and restrooms, is located at Pickets Junction, where Highways 88 and 89 meet. The West Fork Carson River holds wild and stocked rainbow, brook, brown, and Lahontan Cutthroat trout, typically measuring between 8 and 12 inches. Fishing can be slow in cold water and during runoff periods. Better activity is expected after a few weeks of warm weather. Wading requires caution due to the large boulders present in the river. Anglers should adapt their approach to the different sections of the river. If the water is cold, focus on slower, deeper sections where fish might hold. During periods of higher, clearer flow, target the edges of faster runs and the seams around structure.
