About Carson River – East Fork

The East Fork Carson River, a 61-mile undammed tributary, drains a mountainous watershed from its Sierra Nevada origins in Alpine County, California. It flows through a U-shaped glacial canyon, dropping over Carson Falls, and features a state-designated wild and scenic segment. This free-flowing river transitions from lush meadows and wide valleys to craggy canyons and high-desert sagebrush plateaus. Public conservation efforts are underway for a 1,688-acre property near Markleeville, known as Park Ranch, which includes 1.6 miles of river access. The high elevation watershed typically runs high and muddy in early spring, from March through May. Fishing on the East Fork Carson River is possible even during the high and muddy flows of early spring. The river holds trophy, wild, and stocked trout, including federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout. Beyond trout, the East Fork Carson also supports a diverse population of native fish such as Paiute sculpin, mountain whitefish, mountain sucker, Tahoe sucker, Lahontan redside shiner, and speckled dace. When flows are high, focus on slower water behind structure or in eddies. Look for seams where faster currents meet slower water, as fish will often hold there to conserve energy while waiting for food.
