About Ruby River

The Ruby River in Southwest Montana offers a distinct fly fishing experience across its upper and lower sections. Above Ruby Reservoir, the river is ideal for targeting rainbow, cutthroat, and grayling trout in a remote, pristine mountain setting, with nymphs like Pheasant Tails and Hares Ears proving effective. Below the reservoir, the lower Ruby transitions to better public access and is renowned for its brown trout, averaging 10-14 inches with opportunities for larger specimens. Anglers can expect excellent late-season fishing with grasshopper imitations, while caddis and Trico hatches are also notable. While the upper section has limited access, the lower stretch offers more opportunities, though wading can be challenging due to dense bankside brush.
