Report Summary for Apr 2026

This year: Flow has been good on the Upper Madison, with USGS data showing an average of 996 CFS this month, up from 926 CFS last month. Water temperature is averaging 45°F, a bit warmer than last month's 41°F average. Fishing quality has been good to excellent. Clarity was noted as stained on one occasion, but generally seems to be good. Wind has been a hazard reported recently. Nymphing is your most consistent bet right now. Keep your flies deep, occasionally ticking bottom, and don't be afraid to add weight. Tandem nymph rigs with stoneflies like Pat's Rubberlegs or Pheasant Tails trailed by smaller patterns like Zebra Midges, Rainbow Warriors, or 3-Dollar Dips are working well. Perdigons and purple death midges are also good options. Streamer fishing can be effective, especially when it's cloudy. Slow down your retrieve and focus on deeper water. Wade anglers have found success in faster water near $3 Bridge. We're seeing activity from Midges, Blue Wing Olives, and Stoneflies. Dry fly fishing with Skwala patterns is also worth a shot. Recommended nymph patterns include Zebra Midges, Perdigons, Rainbow Warriors, Pheasant Tails, Pat's Rubberlegs, and 3-Dollar Dips. For streamers, try smaller, flashier flies like Goldie, Peanut Envy, or Rusty Trombone.

Prior years: Fishing has been excellent. Nymphing and throwing streamers are the go-to techniques right now. Focus on areas where you can work nymphs and streamers effectively. Expect hatches of Midges, Blue Wing Olives, Skwala Stoneflies, and Caddis.
