About Beaverhead River
The Beaverhead River in Montana is a 70-mile tributary renowned for producing more large brown trout than any other river in the state, also supporting a healthy population of rainbow trout. Anglers will find excellent dry fly opportunities during hatches of Pale Morning Duns (PMDs), Yellow Sallies, and Caddis, with Tricos and Crane Flies also providing exciting topwater action. This river presents technical challenges due to heavy fishing pressure and its twisting nature, requiring accurate presentations, particularly in the highly pressured section from Clark Canyon Dam to Barretts Dam. For those seeking less intense fishing pressure, the 14-mile stretch from Barretts Diversion Dam to Dillon offers better wading opportunities, though private land can limit access. Nymphing and streamer fishing are highly effective for enticing trophy brown trout throughout the Beaverhead.
