About Silver Creek

Silver Creek is a renowned trout stream located in Central Idaho, celebrated for its exceptional dry fly fishing opportunities. This 25-mile-long spring creek flows through open grasslands near Sun Valley, characterized by periodic broad, slow-moving segments often referred to as "ponds." Its diminutive size, while making it easier to navigate, also contributes to significant fishing pressure. The creek is fed by numerous springs and small tributaries, resulting in a soft-bottomed environment rich with aquatic vegetation. Silver Creek is known for its abundance of both brown trout and rainbow trout, many of which reach trophy sizes, with the potential for fish exceeding 30 inches. The trout in Silver Creek are highly attuned to their environment, making a slow and deliberate approach essential. Anglers are encouraged to observe the water and insect activity before casting. Sight fishing is particularly effective, so polarized sunglasses are a must. Silver Creek is a prolific insect factory, and matching the hatch is critical. Expect significant hatches of multiple Baetis species (Blue Winged Olives), Pale Morning Duns, Mahogany Duns, Tricos, Green Drakes, and Brown Drakes. Caddis hatches are also prominent, with Spotted Sedges and Green Sedges being particularly important, along with their larvae, known as Rock Worms. Other insects present include various stoneflies, midges, terrestrials, and scuds. While nymphing is possible, the abundant aquatic vegetation often makes dry fly fishing the most effective strategy, as nymphs can easily get snagged in the weeds. Many sections of the creek are too deep to wade safely, making a float tube an excellent option for accessing more water while respecting private property boundaries. The Silver Creek Preserve offers designated entry and exit points and requires anglers to sign in. Additional public access is available at Kilpatrick Bridge, the Highway 20 Bridge, The Willows, Point of Rocks, and Picabo Access, managed by Idaho Fish & Game.
