About Little Wood River
The Little Wood River runs 130 miles as a tributary to the Big Wood River. Its upper section, above the Little Wood Reservoir, is a small freestone stream flowing through cottonwood forests. Below the reservoir and the town of Carey, it transitions into a freestone spring creek after joining Silver Creek. The river has carved numerous trout holes through lava rock, particularly in its lower desert stretch. This desert water runs through lava rock and sagebrush, offering deep hidden pools and long vistas of neighboring mountain ranges. ADA access, toilets, and campgrounds are available, though boat ramps or docks are not. The upper section and the desert water are remote getaways, while convenient fishing and rafting are found near Sun Valley. The prime fishing area begins where Silver Creek joins the Little Wood River, including the Taylor/Williams Recreation Area near Richfield. Anglers can target Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Mountain Whitefish, and Rainbow Trout. Golden Trout and Rainbow x Cutthroat Trout have also been observed here. The upper section holds small to medium Rainbow and Brook Trout. In the lower desert section and headwaters, expect medium to large Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Cutthroat Trout. The upper section is suitable for learning fly fishing. In the lower desert stretch, fishing is primarily productive in the morning or evening. Focus on well-placed hopper patterns in the trout holes. Large dry flies, including hopper patterns, are effective. Wading is a common method, and rafting or boating is also possible.
