Fly Fishing Stream Conditions Report: Owyhee River - Upper

This year: The Owyhee has been our most productive fishery this year, showing excellent fishing quality with some truly quality fish being caught. Flows are in good shape, and there is no need to crowd above the tunnel. Fish are active and being caught throughout the entire river, stretching from the hot springs all the way to the dam. During the mornings and early afternoons, nymphing with midges and smaller BWOs is the most productive method. Standard nymph rigs with a Juju Baetis or a San Juan Worm will produce well in the deeper runs and seam lines before the dry fly action begins. Once afternoon rolls around, typically between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, a steady hatch of Pale Morning Duns kicks off. The surface fishing picks up in a hurry when these duns start coming off, making dry flies like a Splitsville Trico highly effective. On warmer days, throwing terrestrial patterns like hoppers and beetles with a nymph dropper is also well worth your time.
