About Owyhee River - Upper

The Owyhee River, a 346-mile tributary of the Snake, flows through Owyhee County, ID, for over 160 miles. The upper river above the Owyhee Reservoir is distinct from the tailwater section below it. This upper section includes the "Grand Canyon of the Owyhee," with rhyolite walls reaching 1,000 feet high downstream of the South Fork confluence. The river cuts through the Owyhee Volcanic Field, forming towering cliffs, pinnacles, and sheer-walled basalt and rhyolite canyons. These canyons are often dominated by red, brown, or blackish eroded cliffs, sometimes glazed with yellow to light green micro-flora. The East Fork features the oxbow canyon of "The Tules," a rare geologic formation. Float boating is popular, and low water allows for smaller craft. The East Fork is suitable for kayaks and whitewater canoes, though two difficult portages are required 7 and 9 miles above the South Fork confluence. Access from canyon rims to the stream is possible in many locations, especially during low-water periods, and ADA access is available. The Owyhee River and its tributaries hold redband trout. Smallmouth bass have migrated into the system, creating competition with trout. The upper river above Owyhee Reservoir is known for smallmouth bass, channel cat, and redband trout. The tailwater section below Owyhee Reservoir is known for trophy brown and rainbow trout, with many browns caught between 17 and 21 inches. Bull trout are catch-and-release, and sockeye salmon fishing is illegal. Chinook salmon are stocked. The Owyhee River has plentiful hatches, with Skwala being a favorite. Fly fishing requires matching the hatch and precise presentation; a drag-free drift is essential for large browns. Fish all water types: slow runs, riffles, and deep pools. In warmer months, target early mornings from 5:30 AM to 10 AM and early evenings from 3 PM until dark. During winter, fish the warmest parts of the day.
