About Henry's Lake

Henrys Lake is a high-elevation alpine lake in eastern Idaho, sitting at 6,476 feet. It spans 8 square miles, measuring 4 miles long and 2 miles wide. This shallow lake averages 2 to 9 feet deep, providing the headwaters for the Henrys Fork. A dam built in 1923 significantly increased its surface area. The lake is located in Fremont County, southwest of the Henrys Lake Mountains, just two miles south of the Continental Divide and 16 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. It's accessible via Henrys Lake State Park, offering shore access and boating opportunities. Look for fish around the lake's distinct features. Springs are found along the shoreline at Staley Springs, Pintail Point, Kelly Springs, the Cliffs, and the northshore, often providing cooler water. Inlets like Timber Creek, Targhee Creek, Howard Creek, Duck Creek, Hope Creek, and Kenny Creek feed the lake, creating current and bringing in nutrients. These areas are prime spots for fish to hold and feed. Henrys Lake holds Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, along with healthy populations of Brook Trout and their hybrid offspring, Cutbows. The nutrient-rich waters contribute to rapid fish growth. Given the lake's shallow nature, fish can be found throughout, especially near structure. Focus your efforts around the numerous springs and creek inlets. Fishing subsurface with nymphs or stripping streamers can be effective. Pay attention to the varying depths and current lines created by the inlets. A boat or float tube will help you cover more water, but shore access is available through the state park.
