Report Summary for Mar 2026
This year: Flow has been running low around 188-195 CFS for most of March, with clear water. Fishing quality has been reported as fair to good. Nymphing and streamers are the way to go. Focus on tailouts, foam lines, and slower water. Adjust your weight for different depths and runs. In the Box Canyon, wade fishing has been comparatively easy. We're seeing Chironomids (Midges) and Blue Wing Olives (BWOs). For patterns, try Zebra Midges, Pat's Rubber Legs, Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Silvey's Soft Serve, Griffiths Gnats, Parachute BWOs, and Bling Midges in sizes #18-#22.
Best time of day: Afternoon
Prior years: Fishing has been good with water temperatures around 38 degrees. Access to the boat ramp requires four-wheel drive, and you can launch at the Fun Farm access. Be very careful if you don’t know where to get in, as the water gets deep quickly. Wade out to the islands and focus on using a bobber with Zebra Midges. Midges are active.

• It’s that time of year when rainbow trout begin to spawn. Please use caution when wading and avoid fishing over redds.
• The bears are officially out in Yellowstone, which means they are unofficially out in the Island Park area. Make sure to have plenty of bear spray, and avoid dead stuff.
• The bears are out and have been for a bit. Do not go out unprepared for them, and the rainbows are spawning. Please look out for redds and avoid fishing over them, wading through them, or otherwise disrupting them.
• The Ranch is closed.
