About Clearwater River - Middle Fork
The Middle Fork Clearwater River forms at Lowell, Idaho, where the Lochsa and Selway rivers converge. This 23-mile stretch of water flows west to Kooskia, where it merges with the South Fork to become the main Clearwater River. The Middle Fork is a National Wild and Scenic River, with its entire length situated within Idaho County. Its watershed is substantial, draining over 3,400 square miles. The river's character is defined by its high volume and clear, clean water, originating from the rugged Bitterroot Mountains. Along its course, you'll find a mix of faster riffles and deeper pools, with banks that can range from steep and timbered to more open areas. Structure includes inlets from creeks like Pete King and Maggie Creek, and the confluence zones themselves can be prime holding water. Access points are available, with boat ramps at Lowell and other locations facilitating boat access, though shore fishing is also viable in many areas. Visually, the river presents a dynamic environment, with clear water often allowing you to see the bottom structure and rising fish. This river system is a crucial habitat for a variety of species. Anglers can expect to encounter Chinook Salmon, Cutthroat Trout, Mountain Whitefish, Smallmouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, Steelhead, and Coho Salmon. The river’s aquatic insect life supports these populations, with observed activity including caddis and stoneflies, as well as mayflies like the Blue-winged Olive. When fishing the Middle Fork Clearwater, consider imitating these food sources. For trout and steelhead, a well-placed Prince Nymph or a large Stimulator can be effective. Smallmouth Bass will readily take Clouser Minnows or poppers. During lower light conditions, streamers like a Woolly Bugger or a Marabou Muddler can entice larger trout and bass. Work the deeper pools and the seams below riffles, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Anglers should be mindful of boat traffic, especially during peak seasons, and practice good river etiquette.
