About Buffalo River

The Buffalo River flows through Fremont County, Idaho, a tributary of the Henrys Fork of the Snake River. This 8.7-mile stretch offers a more intimate angling experience, often with fewer anglers than its larger neighbors. It's a spring creek, characterized by clear, meandering water. You'll find it's a relatively shallow and slow-moving system, making visual fishing a primary approach. The banks are generally soft, with vegetation lining much of the channel, so careful wading is key. Access is straightforward, with pull-offs along US 20 allowing for easy roadside parking and short walks to the water. This river is managed with regular stockings of Rainbow Trout, with recent surveys also showing Brook Trout present. The Rainbows are typically stocked as catchable size, with some larger specimens up to 12-14 inches appearing in the summer months. Brook Trout, though wild, can also provide good sport. Hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies are important here, though the trout are not overly selective. When fish are looking up, try a Parachute Adams, Renegade, or Royal Wulff. For subsurface action, a Pheasant Tail Nymph or Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear fished with minimal weight will be effective. Because the water is clear and the river is not deep, stealth is paramount. Approach slowly and cast accurately to avoid spooking these trout. Work the softer edges and any pockets of deeper water you can find. Early mornings and late evenings often bring fish closer to the banks as they feed. If you're sight fishing to rising fish, a delicate presentation is crucial. When nymphing, focus on areas with some current or structure, like undercut banks or submerged vegetation. Sharing the water is common, so be mindful of other anglers and give them space. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when wading.
