About Bruneau River

The Bruneau River starts in the Jarbidge Mountains of Nevada, formed by the East Fork, West Fork, and Jarbidge River. These streams cut deep, sheer canyons through high plateaus before joining to create the mainstem Bruneau. The river flows north through Idaho, eventually reaching the C. J. Strike Reservoir, a tributary of the Snake River. Its drainage basin is bordered by the Owyhee Mountains and Bruneau Plateau. Forty miles of the Bruneau are designated wild, with a 0.6-mile stretch at Indian Hot Springs designated recreational. The canyon walls, composed of rhyolite and basalt, rise up to 1,200 feet, creating a dramatic desert landscape. Access is primarily for whitewater trips, with the Indian Hot Springs area offering a point of entry. This river system supports both redband trout and bull trout, with the bull trout being federally listed. The redband trout are well-adapted to this arid environment, and the bull trout population here is significant, occupying a unique desert niche. Insect activity includes caddis and stoneflies, along with mayflies. Anglers targeting redband trout will find success with dry flies like Elk Hair Caddis and Stimulators, especially in riffles and along the canyon walls. Streamer patterns such as Woolly Buggers can be effective for larger trout, particularly when fished near structure or in deeper pools. For bull trout, larger articulated streamers in white or olive are recommended. Work the water from the canyon rim where accessible, or focus on the calmer sections and pools when floating. Be aware of the challenging whitewater sections and plan accordingly.
