The water is characterized by its clear, cool flow, often with a gravelly bottom and distinct riffles, runs, and pools. Banks vary from open, accessible shorelines to steeper, brush-lined sections. You'll find structure like submerged rocks, fallen timber, and undercut banks that hold fish. Access is good, with facilities including toilets and campgrounds, and a designated ADA access point. The river is managed with a motor restriction, encouraging a quieter angling experience. This tailwater is a prime destination for rainbow trout, with brook trout, mountain whitefish, bull trout, and redband trout also present. Recent surveys have confirmed a healthy population of mountain whitefish, bull trout, and rainbow trout. The South Fork Boise River boasts a robust aquatic insect population, providing ample food for its resident trout. Look for hatches of stoneflies and caddisflies, along with smaller mayflies. When fishing, nymphing is often the most effective technique. Consider drifting large stonefly nymphs like a Pat's Rubber Legs or a Kaufmann's Stone, followed by a smaller attractor nymph such as a Prince Nymph or a Pheasant Tail. For dry fly action, especially during warmer months, try a Stimulator or a large Elk Hair Caddis.
