Fly Fishing Stream Conditions Report: Frying Pan River

This year: The Frying Pan River is running clear and highly fishable, with flows below Ruedi Reservoir ranging from 145 to 199 CFS. Water temperatures remain cold, holding in the 40s near the dam. Anglers should plan their dry-fly windows early in the day, as afternoon thunderstorms are common. On the upper river, above mile marker 8, look for hatches of Green Drakes, Pale Morning Duns, Blue Winged Olives, and midges. On the lower river, below mile marker 8, caddis become more prominent alongside PMDs and BWOs. Light fluorocarbon tippets down to 6X are standard for presenting flies to these technical trout, particularly in the busier stretches just below the dam. For dry-fly success, try drifting a Sparkledun Drake or a Rusty Spinner during the late-day rises. When fishing sub-surface, highly effective patterns include the Black Beauty, Juju Baetis, and Mysis Shrimp.

Prior years: The Frying Pan River is fishing exceptionally well with clear water and steady conditions. Flows have been observed at 156, 180, and 241 CFS, offering highly productive water throughout the system. Early morning and shadier sections of the river are the most productive during hot, sunny days, while overcast or windy afternoons can spark excellent streamer action. High-sun periods require a stealthy approach; keeping minimal line on the water and avoiding heavy indicator rigs will prevent shutting down these pressured fish. Depending on which stretch of the river you are targeting, different strategies are proving successful. On the upper river near Ruedi Reservoir, a recent bump in flows has improved the mysis shrimp bite, making #16 or #18 mysis patterns a great lead fly. For the middle section, early season bugs are giving way to summer hatches, with caddis and Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) moving in. Both dry fly and nymphing setups are highly productive here. Down on the lower river, the fish see less pressure but tend to migrate and wander, meaning you must keep moving to find active zones. Dry-dropper and euro-nymphing setups are ideal for these faster lower sections. A double-dry approach or a dry-dropper setup is highly effective right now. Anglers are finding great success with attractor dry flies like hippie stompers, mini chubbies, or fat Alberts trailing caddis dries, PMD imitations, or nymphs such as salvation nymphs, psycho princes, and beadhead hare's ears. Take your time, move frequently, and adapt your rig to the specific water in front of you.
