About Frying Pan River

The Frying Pan River, a 14-mile Gold Medal trout stream east of Basalt, Colorado, offers exceptional fly fishing for wild Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat, and Brook trout. This scenic tailwater, flowing through a canyon with evergreen pines and red sandstone formations, provides ample public access along its 8-9 miles of Gold Medal waters. Anglers can expect excellent dry fly opportunities with prolific Green Drake mayflies, and during spring and fall, hatches of Blue Wing Olive flies are significant. Winter fishing is also productive, with large midge hatches and opportunities for big fish. A 9-foot 5-weight fly rod with floating line and 3X-6X tippet is recommended for nymphing and dry fly presentations.
