About Fraser River

The Fraser River in Colorado is a freestone stream offering excellent opportunities for anglers seeking wild trout. This medium-sized river, a tributary of the Colorado River, flows through the scenic Fraser River Valley and boasts populations of rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and cutthroat trout. Anglers can expect prolific hatches of Blue Wing Olives (BWOs), Caddis, and Stoneflies throughout the fishing season. Public access is available along National Forest land for the first eight miles of the river, and between Winter Park and Fraser via the Fraser River Trail and USFS campgrounds. Further north, areas near Granby Ranch, while requiring a nominal rod fee, offer convenient access. For those seeking more technical fishing, the Tabernash Canyon section is highly regarded, though access can be challenging. A 5-weight fly rod is generally suitable for dry fly and nymphing, with a 6-weight recommended for streamers.
