Description

The Zonker Diver is a versatile and effective fly pattern used to mimic a struggling baitfish or small mammal on the surface or just below. It combines the realistic movement of a Zonker strip with the unique diving action of a surface fly, making it ideal for targeting predatory fish like bass, pike, and muskies. The Zonker strip, typically made from rabbit fur, provides a lifelike, undulating motion that mimics the frantic movement of a fish trying to escape or a small mammal being attacked. The fly's design allows it to dive below the surface with each strip, and then return to the surface on the pause, creating an enticing "pop" and subtle disturbance, perfect for attracting fish from a distance.

Pro Tip

To make the Zonker Diver move with a true wounded-baitfish kick, let it pause long enough for the rabbit strip to completely collapse, then give it a short, sharp pop without moving the line hand. This loads the foam head just enough to make the fly “side-slap” the water rather than dive straight down. That sideways flare is what triggers most eats—especially from fish tracking low and behind the fly.
