Pat's Midge fly pattern - Midge dry image

Description

Pat’s Midge: Designed by renowned fly tyer Pat Dorsey, is a pattern crafted to imitate the critical phase of midge emergence. During this time, adult midges struggle to free themselves from their pupal shucks, often appearing larger due to the trailing shuck still attached to their bodies. Dorsey observed that trout key heavily on this phase of midge development, and the fly was created to replicate both the emerging midges and those that fail to break free, known as "cripples" or "stuck-in-the-shuck" midges

Pro Tip

Focus on the Surface Film: During the emergence, trout are most likely to target midges that are struggling in the surface film rather than those that are already fully emerged. To take advantage of this, present Pat’s Midge exactly on the surface film. Ensure that the fly is sitting low in the water, with only the trailing shuck visible, making it resemble a midge that’s stuck in the shuck or struggling to free itself.
